Title

Laussel Goddess
The Great Mother, abundant and voluptuous, gazes upon the crescent shaped horn, symbol of the moon, moon cycles, fertility cycles and the cycles of all life. The bull's horn also represents male vigor and fertility. The original is carved into an undulating slab of limestone at the entrance to a paleolithic sacred cave in the Dordogne region of France. This and other finds within the womb-like cave suggest it was the location of fertility rituals.

This ancient Laussel Goddess was discovered in France. Her featureless head is inclined gracefully, her pregnant belly and thighs in prominent relief, as she gazes at the bison horn held in her right hand. Her left touches her fertile womb. [Berlin Staatliche Museum, c. 20,000 BCE]
