The word attar derives from the Persian word atr, meaning “essence” or “sweet fragrance.” Attars have been used to enhance spirituality throughout the East by men and women for thousands of years. Prophet Muhammad related to them as one of the most beloved of gifts that has been given to mankind. There are many references to these perfume oils in Sanskrit literature, the original language of Hinduism, which reveals that oils were made in ancient India by placing holy flowers and sacred plants into water or vegetable oil. The earliest attar distillation was mentioned in the Ayurvedic literature known as the Charaka Samhita. Cosmetics and perfumes were made primarily for worship and sensual enjoyment.
